One of Fort Morgan’s all-time best baseball promoters, leaders and World War II heroes will soon have Hall of Famer added to his legendary name.
Eddie Underwood — who passed away in 1994 — has been selected for the 2010 Colorado Dugout Baseball Club Hall of Fame Class.
Major League Baseball Hall member Tony Gywnn will be the keynote speaker in this special ceremony on Jan. 15 at the Hyatt Denver Tech Center (7800 Tufts Avenue).
Underwood will join 18 inductees that include Irv Brown, Eaton coach Jim Danley, Dick Yates, Bus Cambell, Willie White, Harry Wise and Mert Letofsky, among others. The Hall+ of Fame banquet begins at 6 p.m.
The Colorado Dugout Club has been designed to promote state players, coaches and schools, and build a high standard for statewide baseball while also fostering relationships with national, state and local baseball organizations.
Before beginning his 35-year affiliation with Fort Morgan Legion baseball, Underwood was a tail gunner on an Air Force B-24 bomber that served in both the African and European theaters. He was awarded with the Air Medal as well as four oak leaf clusters and three Bronze Stars.
Underwood became a lifetime VFW member and served as chairman of the American Legion baseball program. Besides organizing 26 state tournaments, he also was a driving force in starting C Legion baseball so younger players could get involved.
“It’s For The Kids” was Eddie’s eternal theme that former Times sports editor John La Porte emphasized during his Feb. 8, 1994 column honoring Underwood.
“He always made you feel welcome and like a friend ... All of us who knew Eddie considered it extremely appropriate that his home was right across from Legion Field (now named Eddie Underwood Field),” La Porte wrote. “Teams used to store gear at his place where it would be handy.
“He would often stroll across the street to watch a game, and he was tireless in his promotion of the program, stumping all over town to line up coaches, sponsors and umpires.”
Underwood — who coached youth baseball — had the pleasure of watching sons John and Carl Underwood both play for the Fort Morgan Legion team.
Eddie also watched grandson Adam Underwood throw a no-hitter in the Legion state championship game which sealed Morgan’s title. Another grandson — Dane Underwood — smashed a grand slam home run that clinched Fort Morgan’s state crown in 2006.
John and Carl have continued his legacy as they’ve organized many tournaments since.
